L'etna

The whole territory of Calvaruso belonged to the noble princess Donna Eleonora Moncada and to her family. She erected on the hill of S. Giovanni, in front of the small center, a Church with a Convent left in custody to the Minor Reformed Franciscans. Initially dedicated to the Immaculate Virgin, the building was consecrated to the service of Ecce Homo after the realization, in 1634, of the wooden statue representing Christ in his suffering by Friar Umile da Petralia born GIOVANNI FRANCESCO PITORNO. The legend tells that the face of the sculpture was carved by the angels, because Friar Umile wasn’t able to finalize the statue in the laboratory of the Moncada’s Castle. The sacred building is famous for the works of art contained in it, see for example the wooden statue of Ecce Homo, sculpted in cypress wood, or the seventeenth-century painting representing the Immaculate with S. Francesco, S. Margherita, Santa Chiara and S. Anna…SEE MORE

Below the promontory there is Oliveri’s lagoon, also called Tindari, a stretch of sea of exceptional beauty, now is a nature reserva for the contemporary presence of the characteristic brackish lake environments with sea sand, and is a destination for tourists who go to the beach of Marinello, which is also the subject of a legend according to which it would have originated after the falling of a little girl – found unharmed- from the promontory of the Sanctuary.
